What Is a CT Scan of the Urinary System?
The urinary system ensures the continuous removal of waste products from the body, maintains acid-base balance, electrolyte balance, and supports reproductive function.
A CT scan is one of the fastest diagnostic methods for the kidneys, ureters, and bladder. It is based on layered scanning and high-quality 3D images, allowing the identification of not only the area of pathology or inflammation but also the extent of tissue involvement.

Preparation for a CT Scan of the Urinary System at NOVO Medical Center
- The patient must bring a referral from a doctor with their contact information, as well as all previous examinations—outpatient records, medical history, hospital discharge summaries, reports from previous ultrasounds, CTs, MRIs, X-ray results, etc.
- If the examination involves intravenous contrast, the patient must have blood test results for urea and creatinine, valid for 14 days.
- Examinations with contrast are performed on an empty stomach (no solid food should be consumed for 4 hours before the procedure).
- It is necessary to wear loose, comfortable clothing without metal elements (buckles, buttons, snaps).
- If the patient has diabetes, takes glucose-lowering medications, and is preparing for a CT scan with intravenous contrast, they must stop taking these medications 24 hours before the examination.
- For young children undergoing this examination under medical sedation, there is a separate preparation: they must refrain from eating and drinking water for 4 hours before the start of the diagnostics. Additionally, at the time of the examination, the child must be healthy, without a cough, runny nose, high fever, or other acute conditions.
